Fall Focus: Cobalt

I love fall. The cooler weather, football games, comfort food, changing leaves, and overall coziness of the season make me giddy. I mean I love summer, but give me a few weeks of it and I'm ready to pull out my riding boots and puffer vests. But even living in Florida, you just don't do that. People will stare if it's 75 degrees and I'm walking around in a plaid shirt/sweater combo. Trust me, its happened. Which brings me to one of the fall trend that I am so excited about: the color cobalt.

Call it cobalt, call it indigo, call it royal blue. Either way, it's gorgeous. And popping up in retail stores everywhere in every form. The best thing about this color is its versatility. It's light enough to pair with fall denim, but bright enough to infuse some life into a fall wardrobe, which in my case tends to consist of blacks, browns, navy, and burgundy. This color just pops, which is so fun with an otherwise heavy fall outfit. It's like, "BAM! I'm Cobalt, hear me roar!". Ok maybe not like that, but you get the picture. It stands out.

Check out my favorite cobalt finds of this season below. Happy Shopping!

Fun in Philly

What more patriotic place to spend the 4th of July than the very city that gave us our independence? Ok you caught me, I spent maybe an hour actually exploring the historical sites of Philadelphia. The main purpose of my visit was for a good old fashioned girls trip. My sister currently has the experience of a lifetime as an intern for Lilly Pulitzer (pause for dramatic effect). I know. Talk about a dream job! So I figured there was no better time to see the Pink Palace for myself! So my mom and I hopped a jet plane to find out firsthand.

Libby gave us the grand tour of the Pink Palace (the nickname of the Lilly Pulitzer HQ) and let me tell you, it was nothing short of amazing. The print studio, where she gets to work every day, is a beautiful mess of fabric, paintings, drawings, scribbles, beads, jewelry, and anything else that can inspire these amazing artists. Literally thrown up on the walls are everything and anything that can serve as inspiration for the next colorful print to come from this studio. How could you NOT love coming to work everyday in an environment like that?!

Tour of the Pink Palace (in our Lilly of course!)

So being the 4th of July, my mom, sister, and I felt it necessary to attend the annual fireworks show along with 500,000 of our closest friends. The "Party on the Parkway" is the nations largest free concert, and it was chalk full of character. From food trucks to street acts to performances by John Mayer and Hunter Hayes, it was an experience to remember. And a pretty amazing fireworks show to top it off.

Taken at about midnight after a long, sweaty day. Excuse the hair.

Now if you know anything about my family when we travel, particularly my sister and myself, its that we are huge, huge foodies. The only aspects of a vacation we plan are where we are sleeping and where we are eating. Literally, thats it. And let me tell you, have we had some amazing, drool worthy, smack you out of your seat good food over the years. It's worth it to spend the hours on urban spoon, trust me. So the last night out we went to the Fitler Dining Room in Rittenhouse Square. Side note, we also stayed at the Rittenhouse Hotel, which was fabulous (especially after being upgraded to a presidential suite. I'm telling you, girls trips have their advantages!). Anywho, the Fitler Dining Room is located in the absolute cutest neighborhood, and seats around 20 people. Thats it, seriously. The kitchen is open for all to see, and the select menu changes seasonally.  I wish I could explain in words how amazing the food was, but it's something only your tastebuds can know. Seriously one of the best meals of my life. And I have high standards.

In front of Independence Hall. So you know, we could say we did the history thing.

Then there was the shopping. Oh my. So in Wayne, Pennsylvania is an eclectic array of boutiques. One I absolutely fell in love with was Skirtin' Around. This whole store was packed with their own colorful patterns, fun silhouettes, and amazing jewelry. I found a navy and green scarf print dress that I had to pry my sister's hands off of (I saw it first!).

Walking the gorgeous streets surrounding Filter Dining Room

I'm moving into this house. Seriously.

Blooms at the Rittenhouse farmers market. If I could bring these to Florida in one piece I would have.

So we also did the Liberty Bell, walked Independence Square, did some shopping, blah blah blah. But really, I am so blessed to be able to take a trip with my mom and sister and have the most AMAZING time. I don't think I stopped laughing the whole trip. We are blessed to have such a close knit family, and we always keep each other on our toes. Overall an amazing trip, and I'm so glad I got to experience it with my family (and my best friends :) ).

Saturday Just Got a Whole Lot Better

So as if Kate Spade couldn't get ANY better.....

It just did.

Introducing, Kate Spade Saturday. A fun, casual, eclectic mix of Kate Spade and retro cool with a mod twist. The brand was launched earlier this year and most recently has been spotted in "pop-up shops" around the NYC area. The line features the cutest weekender bags, sandals. iPhone cases, and even pillows! The prints are fresh and fun, and the prices won't break you bank (need I say more?!).

But the best part of Kate Spade Saturday? The brand's use of social media. Saturday has been born on platforms like Twitter (@ks_saturday) and Instagram (@ks_saturday), and uses these everyday to interact with customers. The twitter feed is constantly responding and interacting with users, and Saturday has already had tons of Instagram activity advertising their 24 hour pop-up shops, located throughout NYC for only a short time. Even the site is fun! Visit the FYI Guide for short videos on how to style their favorite pieces multiple ways. Or head to the Design Your Own Weekender bag to build a one of a kind bag perfect for summer getaways.

It's time other retailers take note: the best way to develop a brand is to have a strong social media presence. It leads to brand loyalty, which turns into repeat purchasers, which means lots of dollar signs (simple marketing math, really).

So without further adieu, I bring you my absolute favorite from the Saturday collection, even though if I could, I would have them all!

Let's Get Nauti

The fact that the nautical trend is finally catching on is music to my ears (and wardrobe!). I own enough anchors, stripes, and navy blue to last me a lifetime. But lately I've been trying to mix up my color scheme, while staying within my nautical roots. The best thing about this style? It can be dressed up or dressed down oh so easily!

Nautical Peplum

I love how this peplum look is here to stay, and it can be so fun paired with some fun seersucker shorts. This Kiel James Patrick bracelet is THE summer bracelet, and don't forget your Jack Rodgers sandals, the ultimate summer shoe.

casual nautical

Ok so I HAD to include just one outfit with anchors! This dress is the perfect daytime dress, and with navy accents (like these to die for Brooks Brothers sling backs) and topped with a fun tortoise necklace, you'll be ready to hit the shoreline (or the mall, your choice).

lilly seersucker

It's also almost impossible to write a nautical post without including a Lilly Pulitzer dress. I love this look because it can go from day to night so easily: the sunnies are gorgeous for daytime wear, and the gold jewelry is perfect for a night out. Also snuck in some more anchors, oops!

sail to sable

Welcome to my favorite new dress line everyone, Sail to Sable. These fun and preppy tunics come in a range of colors and styles, and are SO flattering on every shape. Check out all their dresses and I promise, you won't be disappointed! Again, paired with a Kiel James Patrick bracelet, Jack Rodgers sandals, and a fun cork clutch, you're dressed to impress.

No matter how you choose to style your nautical look, have fun with it! Stick to clean lines, stripes, seersucker, and of course, throw a couple anchors in there too.

Bring on Wedding Season

While summer does mean no more tests, lazy days, tan lines, and sunstreaked hair, it also announces the beginning of another “season”: wedding season. Sure, you’ve been getting the save the dates, you’ve seen the facebook coundowns until the “Big Day!”, but its just now dawning on you that all those weddings mean new dresses! Because there really isn’t a better excuse to buy a whole new outfit than “I have a friend’s wedding, and everyone there has already seen all my cute dresses!” It also begs the question of just what is appropriate wedding attire? Can you wear heels to a beach wedding? Does black tie mean a floor length dress? How short is too short? Have no fear, this simple wedding guide breaks it all down for you, from shoes to clutches to earrings and more!

Traditional Wedding

This type of wedding usually allows for a bit of fun fashion creativity. So why not play with a fun print or bust out a bright color? My current obsession is the J.Crew scallop dress because, let’s be honest, what’s not to love? Top it off with mint and gold accessories for a fun, polished look. Plus, those Kate Spade heels are to die for!

Formal Wedding

Check the invitation for specific instructions, but usually this does not mean ballgown attire. Nevertheless, keep it classy with a high neckline, simple accessories, and muted shoes. This Milly dress is an adorable silloutte with a fun but not too over the top print. Let your dress be the focal point with a simple pearl necklace and conservative heels.

Outdoor Wedding

No matter where you are, there’s a good chance this wedding is going to get a bit toasty. Stay cool with an adorable Lilly Pulitzer shift in fun and beachy colors. Choose wedges over heels to keep your feet from sinking into grass or sand, and top it off with a laidback, cool clutch like this J.Crew straw one.

No matter the type of wedding, it’s all about having fun! Pick a cute outfit, killer accessories, but most importantly: your dancing shoes! Get ready to have fun and celebrate with the bride and groom!

Let's Get Together

The old adage is always "two heads are better than one", right? Designers are figuring that out, and we get to benefit. More and more designers are collaborating to create limited time, one of a kind collections that sell out faster than you can say "I want that!". It's not just clothing designers either: shoes, accessories, and even furniture companies are enlisting the help of top name designers to offer their signature prints for new products. So, I compiled a few of my favorite new collaborations for spring. All of these definitely drool worthy, and completely reasonably priced. What's not to love?!

Kate Spade for Keds

Mix the iconic Kate Spade polka dots with the beloved Keds brand, and the result is exactly what it should be: classic, colorful, and impossible to resist. Some of my favorites include hot pink cap toes and fun orange chevron print.

Liberty Print House for J.Crew

If you haven't heard of this British design studio, you're sure to know it after seeing the beautiful pieces its created for J.Crew this spring. Bright florals with pops of color decorate tees, pants, swimsuits, shoes, and blouses. Browse at your own risk: you'll want it all!

Prabal Gurung for Target

If you haven't gotten your hands on at least one piece of this collection yet, I suggest you grab your keys and head to the nearest Target. Bright blues, neon pinks, and highlighter yellow join forces on an array of silhouettes from dresses to denim. My favorite? The shoes! Classic pumps get a spring twist with the signature print of the collection. Hurry before it leaves the racks forever!
